Medallion of Excellence

How would you describe your experience at WorldSkills Calgary 2009?
It was nothing short of amazing!  I met so many people from around the world, and had a chance to put my skills at work on the world stage.  What an incredible opportunity!

What do you think helped you before and during the competition to reach your objective of winning a Medallion of Excellence?
Besides the countless hours of studying and practicing, the overwhelming support I had from my friends, family, coworkers, and sponsors really helped me before and during the competition.  I don't think I could have done it without all of the positive motivation I had along the way.

How was it when you got back home? When you got back to “normal life”?
It was kind of a shock to my system!  I'd gotten used to all of the stress and my hectic schedule.  It was strange to have time to just sit and watch a movie or read a book.  I still really miss the whole experience, even now that it's months afterwards.

Were there changes in your professional life?
My own outlook on my profession has certainly changed.  I left WorldSkills with a lot more confidence than I had before, and that's something I now bring to the workplace.  I'm sure I'll be seeing the positive impact WorldSkills has had on my career for years to come.

What are your future career objectives?
I don't have anything specific in mind for my career.  I want to keep pushing forward, taking my skills to the next level.  I think there's always something new to learn, something I can improve on...

What would you suggest to other young people who wish to participate to Skills/Compétences Canada’ competitions? To those who want to be on Team Canada?
Take advantage of every opportunity you get!  This is the experience of a lifetime, and you'll find it to be well worth every bit of effort you put into it.

Our Mission

"Skills/Compétences Canada® is a national, not for profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades and technologies to Canadian youth"

Since its inception in 1989, S/CC has evolved into a pan-Canadian organization offering skilled trades and technology competitions at the regional, provincial/territorial, national and international levels as well as other awareness programs for thousands of young Canadians.

Skills/Compétences Canada is also a founding partner of the national awareness campaign, "Skilled Trades: A Career You Can Build On ".

Over the next two decades, employers in Canada will find it difficult to hire and retain skilled workers. We want to help Canada’s industries find well-trained, well-prepared young people to fill these positions.  S/CC wants youth to understand the many opportunities, benefits and rewards of skilled trade and technology careers. Improving the expertise and confidence of individuals pursuing technical careers will benefit us all.
